We pulled straws and I lost, so i drove to TOKYO from kamakura. The only thing i can compare it to is going to the dentist hungover, or driving in Boston Massachusetts early in the morning. Tokyo, for lack of a better term is a giant shit show, where the shit costs tons of cash.
    tokyo oh no
I felt like i was full on losing my mind driving around a giant volvo station wagon, in search of parking. In addition to that the only music we had was Interpol, and one old jungle house cassette….weird combo.
    but crazy Ty approved…
    mad man
Once in Tokyo we went to the gallery at BEAMS to see NAOMI’S art opening…it was great stuff, i was very impressed-amazing turnout too!!!
    naomi show
Then me and the smoking population of Tokyo went out for sushi. The woman on the left looking at the camera is “PAI”, she is a photographer who has shot many people all over the USA for some very noteworthy clients, she also is an ex-tokyo-bicycle messenger, (scene points!!!)
    smokes for dinner
We also went to “surfshop”, a gallery show that showcased the industries” who’s who” in japanese surfboards and cooler than cucumber culture.
    surfshow
I saw some great tee shirts on the attendants.
    best tee
Japanese speeds, 7/11 bathroom stop, and green tea grabs later, and we were home.
god love the speed-racer. crazy eyes…
    PAD BAD TY

Woke to surf the rivermouth today, the waves were awesome and the crowd was minimal, however the recent rain has made the rivermouth spit (what I believe is the equivalent of sewage grade water) into the lineup. As soon as we got to the car, my neck broke out in some weird hive type deal. We stopped for food, and there i could feel my neck just getting bigger and bigger.
I have made it home and showered thoroughly with disenfectant soap and am drinking a ton of water. My neck is feeling better. I’m just going to ignore it.
I’m off to Tokyo now to an art opening and a few meetings so hopefully I live through the night.

    late nights “EARLY MORI’s”

Today I surfed a spot with Ryu Nakamura, I dont know the name of it, but ive named it “turtles” (as there was a massive dead sea turtle on the beach). It smelled like throw-up, but the waves were kindof fun.
I celebrated the rad session with a Soba noodle dinner, this place really gets me pumped for the stuff. (this photo is me doing a “THRILLER” zombie pose in honor of the late MJ, we will miss those dance moves)
    so awake
I have been surfing a lot lately, and perhaps i wouldnt be so much if it werent for Bill Mori’s impeccable skills of guilt tripping me out of bed (off bed i mean, as it is a mat on the floor), at 6 in the morning to surf knee high wind swell.
    MORI: “ty, you wake yet?”
TY : (asleep breathing in mosquito coil fumes)
MORI: “Ty you want come surf or what, I’m going, maybe they no waves tomorrow!”
TY: “Mori Ill go but can we wait a little bit”
MORI: “Ty its the right tide right now, and we better going”
TY: “ok MORI, im coming, Ill meet you in the car in one minute”
    see picture
    asleep
hope everyone is enjoying their summers…

DIGITAL CAMERA R.I.P (rob K is psyched)

    RYU
Today I woke up to surf, and grabbed my digital camera, not really sure why but when i went to turn it on, the screen showed some mystery dot, like a ball of lint or something, after hours of poking and rubbing and trying to find what was in or on the camera, i have decided that its a ghost, or perhaps a manifestation of bad things in the past.
So now i look forward to getting some windup throw away cameras or shooting photos with a digital camera that has a black dot in all the pictures.
In other news i had the pleasure of talking with Mr. Kawazoe today and Ryu Nakamura, both are rad guys, and i hope to be doing some work with them soon.
Ryu has a clothing brand and neat site onlne…im going to be doing some blogging on it so check it… www.hlna.jp
In other news, I need to end my addiction to japanese snack foods and surfing the internet when its raining out, I know its rainy season, but I really should be doing something more than lurking facebook, (which i once loathed, and still do hate), i should be reading, or jumping in puddles.
nope ill just watch The Big Lebowski again.

    no news…no gas…no class

This is “SURFERS bar”, (a popular new surf dive, with Mr. Izawa The raddest surf movie maker in all of japan and his wonderful wife. I went here last night….enough said.

Everyone seems to smoke in Japan so I have personally taken it upon myself to teach some smoking awareness to todays youth, (think of me as a modern day Mr Mc. Gruff), I start by explaining that (although fashionable perhaps in NY), smoking only makes you look ugly and old. I think I’m really making a difference here for the youth.
Here I have a student doing her best Audrey Smokeburn,
    smoking skills
In the car, Bill Mori and I were hitting some harsh hills and listening to Kings of Leon when the Volvo cruise vessel began to shudder….we had run out of gas…
so emergency lights, and a 10 block hike (on Mori’s part), we were back in business
    no gas
Got to hang with artist Hanai Yusuke, and talk about the art world and definitions of japanese surf culture.

I have been doodling off and on here, as I have minimal resources and space, but I’ve really enjoyed “sea treasure hunting” at the beach when there is no surf, there is amazing old pottery and little things that wash up in the black sand. It’s like I’m five years old again when I go to the beach here.
    found woods
Yesterday I went to a little artshow that some girls were putting on, They had traveled from OSAKA (far north), and had neglected to make any sign to say they were having an art show in a local gallery, and nobody could see the gallery from the road.
I told them I would run home and quickly write some info down on some wood for people to see as passing by the gallery….I sped back via the scooter, and they eagerly gathered together to try and hang it on the street.

Extremely thankful, and unable to speak english, the girls gave me cherry blossom cookies, a very special japanese treat…..they were awesome.

This is the temple by my house, its really a great place, im getting more and more, used to going there, its a quiet place, and very easy on the eyes.

As far as I believe Rob Kulisek is one of the best Photographers going, and thats not because hes one of my best friends,(frankly i have a lot of talented friends), Rob sees things that really blow my mind, in everyday scenery, and to avoid sounding cliche, I know he is going places, I know he is one of the main reasons I survived NYC and all the emotional crap I dealt with last year.
Without him here in Japan I decided to include some of his work in my upcoming show, that we have collaborated on. I hope people come to see it in my upcoming show here in JAPAN!!!! AUGUST 15th at COCOMO!!!!!! details soon to come.
